Let’s be honest: As a woman or menstruating person in this society, it isn’t exactly easy to grow up with a lot of reverence for your body, nor your cycle. In this spiritual-feminist podcast about menstrual wisdom and activism for our modern times, I share musings, reflections and conversations to make living as a cyclical being (ALL beings are cyclical, by the way!) in a world set up for linear progress more easeful for you. Let yourself be inspired to detox from the systems of oppression you’ve most probably internalised, so you can walk the spirals of your life with more confidence and trust in yourself and your gorgeous body and reclaim the superpower and ancient wisdom already stored in your bones!
Cyclical Living in a Capitalist World

 <itunes:episode>66</itunes:episode>
 <podcast:episode>66</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Join Megan Leatherman and Lisa Jara in this conversation about how to navigate living as cyclical being (all beings are cyclical!) in a world set up for linear progress, when you still have to work within these systems to earn your living.</itunes:subtitle>

"It might just be less about anything you have to add and more about just surrendering to what is real around you." < Megan Leatherman >

The systems we live in are broken – oppressive structures that are based on linear progress and exploitation of resources (including our own energy) in order to keep up with the self-proclaimed "norm" of continuous growth.

Yet, when we look to our beautiful planet Earth and Nature, we have the best example of sustainability and regeneration right there: Nature is cyclical, and as part of Nature, so are we!

Our bodies, regardless of sex or gender, experience the same seasons, are a miniature version of the vast and woundrous ecosystem that we see all around!

So listen in to this conversation about how to live a more cyclical and empowered life in a capitalist world, as my guest Megan Leatherman and I ponder the questions:

- What is capitalism and how can you recognise the tell-tale signs of this system playing out your own life?
- How can you navigate living as cyclical being (all beings are cyclical!) in a world set up for linear progress, when you still have to work within these systems to earn your living?
- How can attuning to the land and to Nature be the antidote to help you unravel and release the internalised oppressive structures from your nervous system?
- How can you be with the complexity of the situation and still create change towards a different future through joy and contentment?

Resourcing through Somatics with Lise Lønsmann

<itunes:subtitle>Learn simple ways to resource yourself in your day-to-day through somatic practices, even when you feel utterly exhausted. Resourcing will help you connect with your own aliveness and build the capacity to be with the complexity of life.</itunes:subtitle>

Let's face it: Not only do we currently live in a world that's on fire, with big cosmological shifts that reveal the oppressive systems we've been leaning on and internalising – many of us, especially the more sensitive and neuro-spicy folks, also experience an unprecedented level of burnout!

The questions is:
How can you care for yourself when even tending to your basic needs (like feeding yourself) already feels like a chore?

And what if that's more simple than you think and there is a way of doing it that doesn't feel like adding more things to your to-do-list?

In today's conversation my guest Lise Lønsmann and I talk about somatic healing and how it can help you deeply nourish yourself in simple ways.

We dive into:

- Lise's story and how somatic healing helped her support herself through burnout
- The limitations of talk therapy when it comes to processing emotions
- Why somatics is a quiet, rebellious tool to dismantle the systems of oppression
- Simple ways of resourcing yourself without putting more things on your to-do-list

 <itunes:episode>64</itunes:episode>

<itunes:subtitle>Rianne BeCraft and Lisa Jara continue the conversation about PMS & PMDD and speak about some ideas how you can support yourself or your loved ones in this experience.</itunes:subtitle>

Many people have heard about PMS-symptoms – the Pre-Menstrual Syndrome can show up in a variety of physical and psycho-emotional ways, like migraines, bloating, water retention, congestion, and also fatigue, listlessness and mood swings.

But there is something only few people are aware of, which is usually more pronounced on the psycho-emotional level and leads to an intense experience that could be called "PMS on steroids": PMDD – Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder

In the days and weeks before their period, some people enter into existential despair (more than they might normally do), leading them to big questions like “Is all this living even worth it?”

This is extremely taxing on the nervous system, especially when you don't understand that this is connected to your menstrual cycle experience.

Join my guest Rianne BeCraft and me for this intimate conversation about PMS and PMDD, how they might be showing up in your life or in the lives of people around you and a few ideas on how you can support yourself or your loved ones in these experiences.

Because menstrual Cycle issues are common, not normal; and while this conversation is by no means a substitute for professional medical advice, we hope that what we share will help you make a little more sense of your experience and feel less alone in it!

This is Part 2 of the conversation and all about:

- How the premenstrual phase can help you discern your needs, what works for you and what doesn't
- Area of support no. 1: Communication – with self and the people around you
- Area of support no. 2: Grounding & Down-Regulating
- Area of support no. 3: Upregulating (exercise, healthy socialising, "dumb entertainment")
- The three most important systems for female health
- A note on gender dysphoria and female health terminology used

<itunes:subtitle>Join Camilla Lovegrove and Lisa Jara for a conversation about cycle awareness, pleasure and menstrual art as a portal to reclaiming personal power and self-sovereignty – welcoming the disgust, intrigue and intimacy that may come with this practice.</itunes:subtitle>

As you may have guessed, menstrual art – or period painting – means using your menstrual blood to make art, for example on paper, or by adorning yourself with it.

Even though the idea makes my stomach queasy, I like to challenge myself to have these important conversations.

And while there's both intrigue and disgust inside of me, I'm also wondering if menstrual art could become a portal into a deeper, even more intimate connection with myself, with my womb. Because if I myself am whole and holy, why wouldn’t my menstrual blood be as well?

That’s why today, my guest Camilla and I talk about menstrual art and reclaiming the disgust, the connection and the pleasure that may come with this intimate practice.

Join us as we dive into:

- My personal hesitations regarding menstrual art
- How we can develop compassion for ourselves as we sit with different, maybe even conflicting emotions around taboo topics
- What happened when Camilla first offered her blood back to the Earth
- Whether or not it's a smelly process, and the role of the olfactory sense for our human existence
- Ideas how you can dip your toes into menstrual art at any age and any stage of life (yes, even post menopause) and reclaim it as a practice of intimacy and connection to your own inner power

It's never too late to heal the relationship with yourself, with your body, with your cycle, with your blood!

Camilla and I would love to know:

What comes up for you when you think of using your menstrual blood to make art – or even adorn yourself?
What is (or was, if you’re post-menopausal) your relationship with your menstrual blood like?
What has stood out for you from what we’ve been sharing?

My guest Hayley Anderson and I are here to shed light on the hardships and challenges parents, and especially mothers, face and how harmful it can be to normalize them or uphold the patriarchal myth of the "perfect mother".

After our "Fireside Chat about the Challenges of Mothering and Motherhood" (episode 44), we continued chatting, and the more we talked, the deeper we went and unearthed some juicy insights that we didn't want you to miss.

So this episode is a series of snippets of conversation that happened after our recording, that show how we unravel our own conditioning and try to love ourselves in the process, biases and all.

Join us as we dive into:

- the liberation and healing I personally experienced from my conversation with Hayley
- the conflict between putting your children first and prioritising yourself
- busting the patriarchal myth of a "perfect mother/parent"
- making the conscious decision to allow the world to raise our children, too
- a radically different perspective on the mother-child-relationship

Decolonizing the Body – with Kelsey Blackwell & Lisa Jara

 <podcast:episode>54</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Learn how you may have internalized systems of oppression and how to recognise and unravel these patterns in yourself and your body, so you feel liberated in your own life AND contribute to living more harmoniously with each other and our environment.</itunes:subtitle>

Does this sound familiar?

It's hard for you to say No, especially to people you like or want to be liked by.
You hardly know what YOU really want (or don't dare wanting it).
You get by with the bare minimum and maybe secretly pride yourself in not needing much or not taking up more space.
You discount your contribution and the value you bring to the table.
You believe there is something wrong with you.

All these are patterns many marginalized folks hold in the body, that come from centuries of surviving in systems of dominance and oppression that most of our modern societies are rooted in.

Colonization is a complex topic and we certainly won't release its effects in one generation alone.

But my guest Kelsey Blackwell and I hope that by pointing out the ways you may have internalised systems of oppression, and showing you how to recognise and unravel these patterns in yourself, you will feel more free and liberated in your own life – undoubtedly contributing to the necessary collective transformation towards living more harmoniously with each other and our environment.

Listen in as we specifically dive into

- The different lineages influencing Kelsey's body of work
- How the colonist mindset lives inside of your body and how to identify it in your patterns of behaviour
- The importance of re-establishing a relationship with your body and with the land you live on, wherever that is
- Why part of the healing process can only happen in community and why it's important to have black or BIPOC spaces to do this work
- Two simple practices to start decolonizing your body

The only permanence in life is change – but some changes are more difficult to navigate than others. As a confidante through challenging life transitions – the moments of crisis – I’m really excited to have friend and fellow Soul-based Coach Corinne Konrad Calder with me for an open conversation about how to hold yourself when your world is falling apart.

Despite having a rather frightening flavour, “crisis” actually means “turning point”, simple as that. A moment of awakening and decision, where you can let go of parts of you that are outdated and decide on a new direction for yourself and your life.

But how can you navigate this challenging transition, the messy middle, so you come out the other way feeling stronger and more resilient in a new beginning?

That’s exactly what we talked about, so listen in to learn

- Corinne's own story of many challenging and not-so-challenging life transitions
- Why it's important to allow grief and other intense emotions to be present, including ways to process and release them
- The role of a non-judgmental community to feel seen, heard and held in your experience
- How creating space for the autumn and winter phase will make a new beginning more easeful
- Questions to find out what you really really want in life
- Corinne's encouraging message to you

To celebrate my 50th (!!!) episode, I share my personal story and how I got into the work I'm doing now, as a Menstrual & Menopausal Health Specialist and confidante through challenging life transitions.

It's the story about how one book changed the course of my life forever, allowing me to make peace with my eating disorders, release body shame and recognise the sacredness of my (menstrual) cycle.

Dive in to learn

- what the book taught me and how that deeply influenced my life
- how I define embodied cyclical living and why I see it as both my spiritual and my feminist practice
- the two fundamental principles of Life that made me start a Quiet, yet powerful Revolution to bring people back in touch with their own body and cyclical nature

There's research that shows that it's predominantly female bodies that are affected by lymphatic stagnation – leading to inflammation, auto-immune disease, chronic pain, menstrual pain and different conditions of estrogen-dominance, like cysts, fibroids, PMS (PreMenstrual Syndrome), PMDD (PreMenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), endometriosis and symptoms associated with perimenopause.

What role does an optimal lymphatic flow play in alleviating any of them? Why does it get stagnant or blocked in the first place? And how can you care for your lymphatic system, and therefore your female health, on a daily basis?

Join me today as I dive into:

- My personal reason why I'm such an advocate for lymphatic work
- The three main tasks of the lymphatic system for your overall health
- The crucial role optimal lymph flow plays in female health in particular
- How it is connected to nervous system regulation, hormonal balance and breast health

<itunes:subtitle>Whether you suffer from challenges in your female menstrual or menopausal health, or you've got a relatively strong and healthy body – these 5 simple tweaks in your everyday life will go a long way in tending to your optimal (pelvic) health and vitality</itunes:subtitle>

Through my training in women's/female (pelvic) health I recognised that there are five fundamental things that we do every day, that, when paid attention to, will make a big difference in your overal health, and your female (pelvic) health in particular.

They not only help soothe your nervous system, reduce anxiety and improve concentration, they also enhance lymphatic and blood flow, keep your muscles smooth and supple (especially the pelvic floor) and help your digestion – thus allowing your body to do its daily repair processes.

Listen in to find out:

- How you can slow down time (or rather, reduce the speed of life)
- Why the simple things matter
- How to breathe well, drink well, chew well, move well and rest well in order to care for your (pelvic) health

Talking with friends, I often hear that they experience motherhood or parenthood as a lot harder than they would have imagined. And I believe it's in part due to the distorted societal views on what it means to be a mother/parent in this world and the unrealistic expectations placed on them.

My guest Hayley Anderson and I are here to shed light on the hardships and challenges parents, and especially mothers, face and how harmful it can be to normalize them by insisting "They're normal.", "That's just how it is." and "It'll get easier".

We dive into:

- The impact normalizing the challenges of mothering and motherhood/parenthood has on your well-being
- Why it's true that "it takes a village to raise a child"
- What birth story medicine work is and how it can help you process your birth experience
- How to release and heal internalised shame
- The healing gift of being present with another person

Have you ever set New Year’s resolutions only to find that by the end of January you have already forgotten about them? Or that there is this nagging feeling every time you “force” yourself to follow up on them?

Today I dive into:

- Why winter isn't the season for new beginnings (neither is summer in the Southern Hemisphere)
- The crux about goal-setting and why it can be detrimental to your psycho-emotional health
- A juicy practice that you can do instead of New Year's resolutions to help you make positive shifts in more than one area of your life

In this episode, I dive into:

In today's noisy world we can basically buy anything any time or meet up with loved whenever we want, so why is Christmas season still such a special moment for gatherings?

Why is there so much preparation going on weeks, even months before the actual Christmas Day?

What is about Christmas season that makes it so special, that even though we might not be of Christian belief, we can still sense this magic in the air and want to celebrate?

To explore this question, I dive into:

- How Christmas is just one expression of a festival that's been celebrated by humans for millennia
- The energy of Winter Solstice and how it is connected to the menstrual and the moon cycle
- My favourite tradition for this time of year

In the end, I believe, it's about remembering that the spark of the Divine light (whatever "Divine" means to you) is right here inside of you and will guide you on this journey called life.

The festive season can cause a lot of inner stress and anxiety, especially when gatherings, expectations and family traditions are involved. Amy Connor and I share personal stories and explore how to navigate the holidays in a way that feels good for you and everyone involved.

We dive into:

- Reframing "setting boundaries" with "prioritising yourself"
- How Amy's gut literally showed her where to set boundaries
- Why setting a boundary can be beneficial to the self-agency of another person
- The gift of presence, not presents ;-)
- How to set boundaries with love
- The relationship between your boundaries and your pelvic health

Are you stuck in the Paradise Lie?

 <itunes:episode>37</itunes:episode>
 <podcast:episode>37</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Find out where you keep yourself stuck in the Paradise lie, working, pushing and giving in the hope of a future reward – and how to remember your power of choice, using pleasure and celebration to build Paradise right here in your life.</itunes:subtitle>

Growing up in a Christian belief system (whether or not you're actually Christian or believe in the teachings of the bible), many of us have been indoctrinated with a high work ethic and the narrative that we need to work (hard), push and (over)give now, in order to earn some reward later on.

It's closely connected to the Fairy-Tale Lie I talked about last week:
If you work and sacrifice yourself enough now, one day you'll get found and rescued by your prince who is going to take you to Paradise and you will never have to worry or work another day in your life.

It's basically waiting for someone else to say "you're finally enough, you've done enough, sacrificed enough, worked hard enough to "deserve" this.

And all it does is keep you stuck in cycles of burnout and resentment, because the societal systems aren't set up for you to ever reach this reward.

It's even turned against you, with the idea that "if you haven't reaped your reward yet, well, you probably haven't worked (hard) enough for it, so keep on pushing" ...

But what if you could start building your own Paradise right here on Earth, in your own life?

By recognising your power of choice and the power of pleasure and celebration right here in the moment, you'll discover that everything you need to feel fulfilled and successful on your own terms is already inside of you.

So in today's episode I dive into:

- My definition of the Paradise Lie, which is a systemic problem, not an individual one
- Examples of how it shows up in my own life
- How we're kept in a cycle of resentment and burnout and self-policing
- Why it's a good thing that (according to the bible) "Eve got us kicked out of Paradise"
- How pleasure and celebration can in fact be acts of social transformation
- Ways how to release intense emotions and recognise your power of choice

<itunes:subtitle>Find out where you keep yourself stuck in a fairy-tale lie, handing over your power to someone or something outside of you, and how to remember that you're in fact a powerful being that can create a life of their choosing right here, right now.</itunes:subtitle>

Many fairy-tales and other stories that I've grown up with (and you might, too) are about beautiful young princesses that are stuck in a situation and need to be rescued by a handsome prince, who will sweep them up on his horse and they live happily ever after ...

Apart from the gender and skin colour bias most of them show (and why are older women usually the evil witch or the mean stepmother?!?), there's a deeper problem at hand:

How often have you wished to be that princess, who finally gets recognised for her gifts, her love and devotion, taken out of the situation she's in, so she can finally enjoy life to the fullest, forevermore?

I know I have ...

Let me show you how that way of thinking can keep you stuck in a fairy-tale lie, where you hand your (inner) power over to someone or something outside of you to "come to your rescue", and how you can remember that you're in fact a powerful being that can create a life of their choosing right here right now.

In this episode I dive into:

- The trap of learned helplessness and how to recognise when you're in it
- How to regain that sense of inner power when you feel powerless
- The particular fairy-tale lies I keep myself stuck with
- Why I actually wouldn't want a prince to "rescue me" (even though I thought I did)

Enjoy the episode and let me know:
What is your favourite fairy-tale lie that you keep yourself stuck with?
And what could you set in place, so that next time you fall for it, you'll recognise it sooner (and take your powwer back)?

Send me a message and let's have a conversation!

Key takeaway for many people from my work (whether that's clients, family or friends): "What a relief to know that I don't have to be the same every day!"

In a society that glorifies linear progress and treating human beings (and other beings, too) like machines or resources to be exploited, it's a courageous act to remember, that we're in fact cyclical beings, constantly influenced by a myriad of different cycles, that make it impossible to not have lfuctuations in mood, energy, emotions or mental capacity.

So today I bring you a mini guided exploration to anchor in the belief/knowing that you don't have to be, feel or show up the same every day!

This is your permission slip to be your whole self, exactly as you are today, right in this moment!

Love you!

 <podcast:episode>34</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Piper Rose and I explore how perimenopause is a unique opportunity of self-inquiry for women, non-binary menstruators and menstruating men, in order to live a more authentic life and embrace their body and personal experience.</itunes:subtitle>

Warning: This episode is potentially activating to your nervous system, so please make sure that you are in a good space to absorb the information and have a soothing practice at hand that you can turn to, should your nervous system react!

(Peri)menopause – even though often treated as a disease and the "end of your life" – is usually thought of as a "women's domain". But they're not the only ones experiencing this important transition in life.

And non-binary menstruators and menstruating men don't necessarily feel comfortable in those spaces or resonate with the identity-centered experiences of "menopausal women", so they naturally experience a tension and constriction that invites them into a deeper inquiry to examine what the experience means to them.

In today's episode my friend and peer Piper Rose and I focus on this Rite of Passage as an opportunity to get clear on one's values and embrace one's body and unique human experience.

We dive into:

- Why queer folks and non-binary menstruators may be better equipped for a more easeful perimenopause transition
- The flitting mosquitoes of patriarchy that incite fear in women and menstruating folks alike
- The powerful questions women, non-binary menstruators and menstruating men get to ask themselves when they come into (peri)menopause
- How identity isn't fixed, but rather something that gets to shift and morph and evolve throughout one's life
- The importance of personal values in making sense of one's experience
- Why transformation and change are scary, but a huge opportunity for something better than your wildest dreams

What the Witch and Kali Ma teach us about the Pre-Menstruum and the Perimenopause Transition

Autumn is a really magical time – the leaves turn colourful, the air becomes cool and crisp and our intuition is heightened.

It's a season that speaks of personal power and transformation and standing in our sacred Yes and No.

But autumn doesn't only refer to the outer season, it's also closely connected to the pre-menstrual phase and the perimenopause transition. And these can be quite challenging experiences for many.

Luckily, both the archetype of the Witch and the Hindu goddess of death, destruction and motherly love, Kali, offer you valuable lessons on pre-menstrual rage, pre-menstrual tension and perimenopausal mood swings and how you can navigate them all with more ease.

In today's episode I dive into:
- What the Witch and Kali Ma teach us about the pre-menstruum and the perimenopause transition
- That "witch" once was a gender-neutral term
- How rage can be sacred and cleansing
- Why the truth, though it sometimes hurts, is profoundly healing and liberating
- How the season of autumn, the pre-menstruum, the waning moon phase and perimenopause are all interconnected

<itunes:subtitle>The Rite of the Womb was given to a lady shaman in the Amazon jungle from a lineage of women who freed themselves from suffering and who want us to remember that the womb space is not a place to store fear and pain, it's to create and give birth to life.</itunes:subtitle>

Indigenous cultures and our ancestors teach us that the womb is not a place to store fear and pain, it's a place to create and give birth to life.

Yet, for many generations, womb-bearers (women and menstruating folks, whether or not they have physical organs present) have accumulated not only the pain and suffering from their own life experiences, but also that of their blood ancestors.

No wonder we see all sorts of menstrual health conditions increase, like painful periods, endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, cysts, pain during intercourse, vulvodynia, vaginismus or any other sort of pelvic pain.

The "Rite of the Womb" was given to a lady shaman in the Amazon jungle and is for all womb bearers (women and menstruating folks, whether or not you have physical organs present) who are ready to release pain and suffering from their womb and instead welcome it back as the powerful source of inner wisdom and creativity from where all Life is born, physical or not.

As a Womb Keeper (receiver of this powerful Rite) myself, today I share:

- What the Rite of the Womb is and how it was given to humankind
- The importance of the Rite of the Womb in my own journey of healing menstrual pain and other symptoms
- How it helps us remember our place in the web of Life and come home to ourselves
- Why the Wheel of the Year festival Samhain is an especially potent time to set a healing intention
- An invitation to release fear and pain from your own womb and become a Womb Keeper yourself

Why it's easier to hold Others through Transitions (and not yourself)

<itunes:subtitle>Nobody likes the messy middle of change, that's why we hire coaches. And since as a coach I'm drawn to the places of transition, the crossroads, the life crises, I wonder why it's so much easier to hold others through their stuff, but not myself?</itunes:subtitle>

Nobody likes the messy middle of change, but that's what I as a coach am particularly drawn to:

The transitions, the crossroads, the life crises.

Because I trust the space we create, I trust your process and I trust your inner light to guide us along the journey

But I wonder, why is it so much easier to love others and hold them through their struggle, than it is to hold ourselves, let alone allow others to love and hold us?

So I'm diving into:

- Why Friday 13 is a double-lucky day
- What I learned in a puddle of tears on the floor
- Why I love life crises (even though it's weird to admit)
- The mental, emotional and societal layers that make it easier to hold others through transitions, but not yourself
- Why it's important to develop (or rather, remember) the loving, compassionate inner witness and how it will help your nervous system to relax, and your system to find resolution

(Peri)Menopause is possibly the most pivotal and powerful transition in the life of a woman or a menstruating person and needs to be understood and appreciated as such.

Unfortunately, in our society it also has a bit of a bad reputation.

I want to shine a light on the underlying dynamics for menopause-associated symptoms and how to support yourself through the transition. Because even though you'll most likely experience at least some of the symptoms, when you feel well rested and emotionally nourished, everything's going to be easier to handle and you'll not experience them as suffering.

In the episode I dive into:
- The difference between perimenopause, menopause and post menopause
- The physical shifts happening in the body during the perimenopause transition
- The main disruptor and contributor to menopause-associated symptoms
- Physical, emotional, mental and energetic stressors that influence the experience
- How to prepare for a transition that's as easeful as possible

We live in systems that aren't set up for our benefit, but seek to separate us from ourselves, each other and the land we live on, so we extract from and exploit the Earth and our own bodies for other people's gain. Ixchel Lunar and I want to raise awareness about how these systems and structures have really impacted our experience and perspective of time, and how the pace of life is a social construct that works against us in so many different ways.

In today's episode we specifically address how embodied cyclical living is a practice of decolonization and celebrating all of Life. We dive into:

- How our bodies have been colonized and why this results in a lot of the female health issues we see today
- Why we experience intense anxiety when we separate from the body
- How you can start communicating with your body and why it matters
- The many different cycles we're influenced by all the time
- How your cycle (because all beings are cyclical) is a compass back home to yourself, to the place where you belong

- What the act of decolonization means and encompasses
- That decolonization is a process that we are part of, but not solely responsible for
- What the land-back movement is and how it helps indigenous people to restore the relationship with the lands they originally tended
- How to start building a relationship to land and place when you live in the city
- The importance of co-regulation and befriending time to get us from fight-or-flight to a rest-and-digest state
- How food and activities that are connected to our people are very powerful ways to really connect into our resilience and the seasons

Warning: This and the following three episodes of this series are potentially activating to your nervous system, so please make sure that you are in a good space to absorb the information and have a soothing practice at hand that you can turn to, should your nervous system be activated!

Follow us in this four-week series where we dive deep into the topic and practices of decolonization, especially how to decolonize time and the body, thereby opening opportunities for liberating and experiencing flow that brings healing to the individual as well as the collective.

In today's introductory episode, we dive into:

- Ixchel's background story of healing and recovering from burnout
- My background story of how learning about the cycles (the personal and the cycles around us) has helped me make peace with my anorexia and with my body
- Simple definitions of what colonization and decolonization actually mean and how they tie into the white supremacist capitalist narratives of our modern society
- Four core ways time has become colonized
- Tools to soothe and regulate your nervous system to help you move forward with this important work

 <itunes:episode>25</itunes:episode>
 <podcast:episode>25</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Welcome to Part 4 of this 4-part series to help you get to know your cycle (menstrual or moon) better and make sense of your cyclical experience, so you can journey this monthly process of inner death and rebirth with more ease, calm and confidence.</itunes:subtitle>

In this four-part mini-series, I'll walk you through each phase of your cycle and how it works you on a physical, emotional, mental-psychological and spiritual level every month. This is especially relevant if you are a woman, whether or not you're bleeding and whether or not you have physcial organs present, or if you are a non-binary menstruator in pre-, peri- or post-menopause.

Because when you understand the processes going on inside of you and how to journey this steady death-and-rebirth process consciously, with awareness, you will feel more relaxed and grounded in yourself. You develop trust in this cyclical rhythm that might seem incontrollable and undependable at first, but that's actually very dependable, just in a different rhythm than your mind would like.

Since a cycle is inherently regenerative, allowing for each phase/season to have its place will ensure that you spend your precious life force on the things that really matter to you and that you deeply care about.

I dive into:

- What the "Inner Autumn"-phase is
- How it influences your body, heart, mind and soul every month
- A journaling prompt to connect with the unique wisdom your "Inner Autumn" holds
- A practice to help you tap into the power of your own "Inner Autumn" experience

A personal example of how I dismantle societal conditioning in myself

<itunes:subtitle>I love when I recognise societal conditioning in myself – awareness is the first step to changing things! In this episode I share two shorter pieces of me uncovering and dismantling conscious biases in my own life.</itunes:subtitle>

Having grown up in a "modern" (i.e. patriarchal, white Christian supremacist, capitalist, racist, ageist, ableist, colonist) society, we all hold a lot of unconscious biases in our system that create separation inside of us and among one another.

I'm committed to a more equitable and inclusive world for all, so I'm actively working on dismantling societal conditioning in myself, first and foremost.

Today I share how I recently uncovered extraction culture paradigm and unconscious biases at work in myself. Maybe it serves as a reminder for you that this work takes time, it's a process (not a linear one!), and it's okay to mess up as long as you learn from it.

I dive into:
- what extraction culture is and how I fell prey to it with regards to the summit I've recently been speaking at
- why story is a vital part of our human learning experience
- how easily we perpetuate the systems we're trying to challenge, if we aren't mindful of our choice of words
- why we're all "wet" and that the only requirement for a different, more inclusive future is a willingness to learn
- my Quiet Revolution

<itunes:subtitle>My guest and peer Teresa Hawkes bravely shares her own story of pre- and post-natal depression and postpartum psychosis with us, and how she moved through the darkest period of her life.</itunes:subtitle>

It's not uncommon for people who have given birth to experience post-natal depression, sometimes called "baby blues" -- which actually downplays the dramatic effect it can have on one's life. But even if they know the possible signs and symptoms, due to the way our society works, they usually believe THEY are the problem, THEY are being a bad mother or parent and that they should get their act together and cope with it all alone.

Let's call BS on that!

My guest and peer Teresa Hawkes bravely shares her own story of pre- and post-natal depression and postpartum psychosis with us, and how she moved through the darkest period of her life. Today she encourages people to get the support they need and tries to leave a little sparkle wherever she goes, giving others hope that things CAN get better.

About Teresa:

Teresa Hawkes is a mother of four boys from Northern Ireland who went through her own journey of pre- and post-natal depression, and postpartum psychosis after having her youngest child. Now she is passionate about empowering and educating folks around all things menstrual cycle and menstrual health.
She has completed the Red School Menstruality Leadership Program in 2022, holds a diploma in Mental Health and Wellbeing and a degree in Mother & Toddler Yoga.
Get in touch through her Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/moth4b or reach out to her via email at moth4b@hotmail.com.

Ressources we mentioned:

Support 2gether (charity in Northern Ireland): https://www.facebook.com/s2charity

We have this narrative in our society that the body is a wild thing that needs to be controlled (and if you can't it's somehow your own fault). Today I share how your body is actually trying to support you and keep you alive as best as it can with the means it's given.

I dive into:
- why a lecture on PCOS and obesity really activated my sacred rage
- a rant about the Western medical industry and how doctors fail to look at underlying root causes of dis-ease (which is a systemic problem)
- why "reduce your weight" is a superficial answer to a deeper (societal) problem
- our societal sugar addiction and toxic load
- why your body is in fact your greatest supporter in life

A Fireside Chat about Supporting your Tween through their First Period

 <itunes:episode>17</itunes:episode>

<itunes:subtitle>The first bleed in the life of a menstruator is a powerful Rite of Passage and should be marked as such. Neutral at best, the experience is much more often associated with fear or even shame. This doesn’t exactly contribute to body positivity ...</itunes:subtitle>

What was your own first bleed experience like?

Menarche, the first bleed in the life of a menstruator, is a powerful Rite of Passage and should be marked as such.

Unfortunately, the experience is usually neutral at best, but much more often associated with fear or even shame.

This doesn’t exactly contribute to young girls and menstruators loving their bodies more ... promoting the disconnect and downright body hatred patriarchy wants us to get caught up in ... just saying...

So how about we don’t allow history to repeat itself and make sure that today’s teens have a different experience from the start?

In today's episode, my guest Liz Vivian and I talk about how you can support your tween through their own process of learning what it means to be a menstruator.

We cover:

00:54 Who Liz is and her peri-menopause journey
03:34 Liz’ journey of aha-moments that lead her to do the work of supporting mums be(come) confident in supporting their tweens through their first period
08:57 Why WHO you want to become is much more important than WHAT you want to do
11:35 How Liz prepared herself and her daughter for her first period
14:34 How you can set an example as a cycle-aware parent
17:13 The importance of stopping to be so secretive about our bleed, especially for our teenagers
21:31 The particular and powerful position of mums/birthing peoplse as support for their tweens and why mums have permission to receive support themselves
24:27 Why the first 13 periods are just as important as the special very first one and can foster the mother-daughter or parent-tween connection in a time where the tween craves independence
27:47 How mum’s have all the wisdom already within themselves, to lead their tweens through that meaningful time
33:03 Why it is so vitally important that girls and young menstruators have a healthy first bleed experience
36:38 How to connect with Liz and Raising Flora
37:32 Liz’ message to you

Bio:
Liz is a coach, a menstruality mentor and a mum. Through her business, Raising Flora, she helps moms feel confident, be prepared and show up with compassion for their tween's first period. Passionate about giving the tweens of today a healthy, positive start with their cycle, she knows moms are in a powerful position to lead the way toward a less shamey and more open and meaningful experience.
Liz and her husband are also raising a daughter, who is 11 and stretching toward independence. They are a tight knit family who love travel, outdoorsy adventures, and good food.
In 2022, Liz is celebrating her Year of Being 50 by walking – around her neighbourhood, across Spain, and in half marathons with family and friends.

In our patriarchal-colonialist society, many have learned to see the body as a wild animal that needs to be tamed and behave. A thing to be controlled and forced into a certain shape, usually according to the prevalent standard of beauty and health defined by a small group of people at the top... And if you don't get it to behave the way it's "supposed to", there's something wrong with YOU - which is of course total BS!

We're trying to control Nature and that is not only impossible, but moreover, it leaves us completely disconnected from our bodies – these beautiful living, breathing organisms that support us with unconditional love day in and day out!

Learn how to connect and communicate with your body through cycle awareness, which for me is a practice of decolonising our body and mind from these imposed structures and of trusting this animal body of ours to be wise in a way that doesn't make sense to our logical brain, but that will make us feel truly ALIVE!

A Fireside Chat about the Beauty of Death as a necessary phase in our human evolution

 <itunes:episode>13</itunes:episode>
 <podcast:episode>13</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>In the western part of the world, Death is a scary thing, the end of something. Maybe our pain can be carried in a way that is infused with beauty, when we realise Nature works in cycles and we are able to experience a rebirth of something new.</itunes:subtitle>

Death in this western part of the world is a scary thing, it feels like the end of something, losing something. We are no longer connected to what was, the history, the happy memories, so it feels really brutal, a painful process.

Maybe our pain can be carried in a way that is infused with beauty, when we realise this is how nature, the universe, the cosmos works. It works in shapes that are circular, it works through cycles, it works through seasons.

And as we go through those seasons, we are able to experience a rebirth of something, of a pattern, of a relationship, and it gives so much room for new things, new growth, new perspectives.

And that is where the beauty is, whenever we let go of the old pattern, we’re actually making room for a new one, one that we hopefully get to consciously choose and create and design into our life.

In today’s Fireside Chat, my guest Yanaëlle Ntwa and I speak about:
01:58 Who Yanaëlle is and our cycle check-in
05:19 Yanaëlle’s perspective on the Beauty of Death as a necessary step in human evolution
09:05 The little deaths we die all the time, especially as women and/or people who bleed, and what we can learn from them about Life
12:33 Yanaëlle’s and my musings about what happens after the death of a body
16:55 Death is a transition and it’s less painful when we open to its teachings
21:06 Yanaëlle’s journey with anxiety around Death and what helped/helps her move through it
26:53 We are never truly as alone as we might think
29:56 Through writing/journaling, meditating or Nature walks we can connect back to this neutral observer within, drop the chatter of the mind and see the bigger picture
35:45 The cycles help us strengthen our truth and identity
38:29 How to connect with Yanaëlle and read some of her poetry
39:32 Yanaëlle’s message for us: Let it be. Let them be.

My podcast episode about forgiveness that I mentioned: https://lisa-jara.com/en/blog/e9-forgiveness-and-closure-in-december

Yanaëlle Ntwa is a writer and a brand poet. She teaches business owners how to hone their storytelling skills in their business and writes poetry for brands who want more soul in their copy.

With the upcoming Winter Solstice, the darkest and lowest point we collectively get to in the Northern Hemisphere, I felt called to take a little dip into the four big wounds women and people socialised as women often experience in our society. Because this is the time to face our shadows, our wounds, to shine a light on them, so we can learn their lessons and allow them to heal.

Today, you'll learn about:

- The Mother/Daughter Wound
- The Sister Wound
- The Witch Wound and
- The Wound of the Masculine

Because recognition, understanding and acknowledgment create space for compassion and forgiveness and, subsequently, healing.

Often we move from recognition to beating ourselves up ...
But when we dare to sit with the pain of the recognition, care to truly understand our wound and what it might be here to tell us, acknowledge and validate our experience, we can develop more compassion for ourselves, for the wound, for other people and maybe even start forgiving (not forgetting).

This is not for the faint of heart. But it will bring you much peace of mind.

A Fireside Chat about Endometriosis

 <itunes:episode>8</itunes:episode>
 <podcast:episode>8</podcast:episode>
<itunes:subtitle>Endometriosis is not incurable and healing is possible when you know how to access the wisdom that already lives inside of your body! Listen to my guest Amy Connor and I speaking about why neither synthetic hormones nor a hysterectomy are the answer!</itunes:subtitle>

Today I want to draw your attention to something that is finally getting a little more of the recognition it deserves, especially since at least 10% of women and people who bleed experience it: Endometriosis.

Sometimes mistaken for “a painful bleed”, endometriosis is actually a condition where tissue similar but not identical to the endometrial lining of the uterus that we shed every bleed, grows outside of it (e.g. outside of the uterus, around the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, but also the intestines, lungs or scar tissue anywhere in the body).

Unfortunately, many receive their diagnosis very, very late, complemented by the message “You’re infertile and incurable! Get a hysterectomy …” which is insensitive and not the answer!

My guest, women’s pelvic health specialist Amy Connor, and I speak about how healing is possible when we know how to access the wisdom that lives inside of our body.

Amy is dedicated to connecting women back to their body and nature. Personally, having suffered for decades with her own health and wellbeing struggles: endometriosis, menopause, poor gut health and stress to name a few. Amy went on to discover the magic of connecting back to the healing powers of her own body and nature!
Amy supports individuals (with the symptoms of) endometriosis to connect with their bodies and address the condition at its root cause. No pill, no surgeries and no BS that the condition is 'incurable'.
Amy is based in Hornsea, UK. She is an intuitive lover of life. Her main loves in life are her husband Tom, her 2 dogs Monty & Meg and her ever-growing number of niblings (nieces and nephews). Also cups of tea and food.

"If you want to live a life true to yourself, you have to be full of yourself. Because if you're not full of yourself, there's room for other people and their opinions to creep in!"

This genius thought popped into my head when I listened to someone saying that there's a good kind of being selfish, of being full of yourself... Today I share with you why I believe that being "full of yourself" on all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual - means understanding that the way you are is okay, even beautiful, and that choosing yourself first will lead to lasting fulfilment and happiness.

What is your Natural Season?

<itunes:subtitle>I believe that we all have a natural season (in our personal cycle and in the outer seasons) we feel most at home, most comfortable in. Listen on to find out which could be "yours" and how it will help you bring more ease into your cycle experience.</itunes:subtitle>

As women and/or menstruators, we transition all the time. Our whole life is about transitions, because we transition from inner season to inner season roughly every seven days, if not less. There is no permanence.

But knowing that there is a rhythm over the whole cycle, and that you will have times when you feel more energetic and times where you feel more inward and times where you feel more creative and times where you feel more reflective, will allow you to go easy on yourself and not make yourself wrong for it, because it's just a natural part of life.

And we can start using our personal cycle and the transitions that we move through as a practice ground for when life really throws us a curve ball and we have to go through a bigger transition.

In this episode you'll find:
-> a brief recap of the inner seasons/four main phases of any cycle
-> how the theme of my natural season shows up in different areas of my life
-> an invitation to ponder about what your natural season could be

If you want to get to know your inner seasons and start tracking your cycle in a very simple way, you can find my free cycle charting resource here:

Working in the realm of empowerment, we have to navigate a fine line between our genuine wish to support people, having them feel like the powerful being they are, and perpetuating a world view that’s heavily influenced by patriarchal-colonialist thinking …

So to anyone using the phrase “I empower XYZ (person)”: Stop it! You can’t empower another person, because the power is already in them!
You can help them recognise their own agency, so they feel more empowered in their life.

And if you think this is only semantics, remember that the words we use show our perception of the world and create our reality. Spelling comes from spell! What kind of spell do you want to weave?

All Life is cyclical. Yet living in a society that is built in a linear fashion, focused on progression and constant expansion - better, higher, faster -, we can sometimes forget that ebbs and the downward spirals belong to life as much as the flows and upward spirals.
In this episode I share how our cyclical nature can help us get to know ourselves better and better and develop the inner trust that we are already wonderful and amazing human beings, just as we are right now, in this moment.
As women and people who bleed we walk the spirals every month, and doing it in a conscious way will help us stay deeply connected to who we are while navigating the bigger transitions in life.
